A Child's First Visit to the Dentist

Are you planning to take your child to see a dentist? That’s a great decision. It’s best if the first visit is just an introductory one—when there’s nothing wrong. That way, your child will have a calm and positive experience without pain or fear, and getting to know the dentist will take place in a comfortable setting.

What to Expect at Your First Dental Appointment
We create an atmosphere of trust, curiosity, and support so that children leave with only positive memories and a desire to come back again.
Helping children adjust to dental visits is a delicate process that requires not only professionalism but also an understanding of child psychology. At MONÉ, the pediatric dentist becomes more than just a doctor to the child—they become a friend with whom the child feels calm and engaged.

The adaptation course is also recommended for toddlers who have trouble sitting still or who experience natural fear—in such cases, it’s important to gently prepare the child before moving on to full-scale treatment.

The main goal of the adaptation visit is to bridge the gap between the dentist and the child and build trust.
First comes the introductory phase: the dentist assesses the situation, the child’s developmental level, and their willingness to cooperate. It’s important that at this stage we “play by the child’s rules”—adapting to their mood and pace.
The first visit can take place in whatever setting is most comfortable for the child: in the waiting room, in their parents’ arms, or in a chair with their mother—whichever option makes the child feel the most at ease.

Already at this stage, the dentist understands how best to structure future interactions. During subsequent visits, the child builds on this experience, and the rapport gradually strengthens. We use the “tell—show—do” approach so that the child understands and accepts each step.
Once trust is established, the dentist gently introduces the child to simple procedures—such as brushing their teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Only then, step by step, can we move on to full-scale treatment.
The number of adjustment visits is always determined on a case-by-case basis. At MONÉ, this isn’t a random process but a well-thought-out system: each visit is a new small step forward that reinforces a positive experience.

Tips for Parents on How to Prepare Their Child
There are two approaches to helping a child adjust: before treatment begins and after it ends.
Children under 3 years of age are often not ready for adjustment visits due to their age. If extensive treatment is required, it can be performed under sedation or general anesthesia. This also applies to children with significant psycho-emotional challenges.

In such cases, the adaptation process can be postponed until after treatment. This approach is also suitable in situations where treatment cannot be delayed—for example, in cases of severe pain, extensive treatment, or if the patient lives far away.

After treatment, the adaptation program includes regular preventive visits—usually once a month. During these appointments, the child gradually becomes familiar with dentistry in a calm environment, gets used to the dentist, and develops a positive attitude toward future treatment.
  1. For the first visit, choose a morning appointment at the clinic. This will help your child avoid feeling anxious all day and ensure they’re alert. Also, there’s no need to arrive early—just make sure to be there no more than 10 minutes before the appointment.
  2. Make sure your child has eaten.
  3. During the first visit, the dentist will familiarize your child with the office and, through play, encourage and teach them how to brush their teeth. The dentist may perform a professional cleaning if your child is ready. This introductory visit is primarily aimed at easing anxiety about the unknown and establishing a trusting relationship.
