The device works using the transillumination method: a beam of light is directed at the tooth; healthy tissue allows the light to pass through, while decayed tissue blocks it. The image is displayed on the screen in real time, allowing the dentist to show parents all the damaged teeth and assess the depth of the decay to develop a treatment plan. If necessary, images can be saved to digital media or printed out.
How Laser Diagnostics Is PerformedDuring the procedure, a special sensor is placed in the child’s mouth; it emits light, captures the image with a digital camera, and displays it on a monitor.
