What is fissure sealing, and why is it important for children?
A reliable way to protect molars from cavities is fissure sealing. It’s a simple and painless procedure that can reduce the risk of cavities by up to 95%.

At our clinic, fissure sealants are applied by experienced pediatric dentists who know how to connect with even the most anxious patients. Your child will feel calm and comfortable, and you can be confident in the safety and high quality of the treatment.

Fissures are natural grooves and depressions on the chewing surfaces of teeth. In children, they are often deeper and narrower, making it easy for plaque and food debris to accumulate there. Even with good oral hygiene, it can be difficult to clean these areas thoroughly, which is why cavities most often start here.

Sealing is a preventive procedure during which the dentist carefully fills these grooves with a special protective material. It hardens under a light and smooths the tooth’s surface, leaving no places for bacteria to accumulate. As a result, the teeth stay healthy and protected for longer.

Indications and Contraindications
We recommend fissure sealing for most children between the ages of 3 and 14—especially if there are risk factors:
  • pronounced, deep, and narrow fissures on primary or permanent teeth;
  • an increased risk of tooth decay (for example, due to weak enamel or fluoride deficiency);
  • early signs of demineralization—white spots without cavities;• the period when permanent molars are erupting (around ages 6–7 and 11–13);
  • difficulties with regular and thorough oral hygiene.
It is important to note that the main contraindication for sealants is existing tooth decay.
How Are Fissure Sealants Applied
at MONÉ Dental Clinic
The procedure is carried out in several stages and is fully tailored to the child's comfort:
Consultation and Diagnosis
The dentist carefully examines the condition of the teeth and rules out the presence of cavities.
Preparation
The chewing surface is carefully cleaned of plaque, treated with an air jet, and disinfected. A special gel is then applied to help the sealant adhere securely.
Sealing
The liquid material is evenly distributed throughout the fissures, filling all the crevices, and is then cured using a light-curing lamp.
Finishing
The dentist checks the bite, removes excess material, and polishes the tooth's surface.
On average, the procedure takes about an hour, with each tooth taking up to 15 minutes to treat. However, much depends on how ready the child is for the appointment—sometimes it takes several visits for the child to feel comfortable.

Dental Care After Sealant Application and Recommendations from Experts
After the procedure, the child can immediately return to their normal routine. The only restriction is that it’s best to avoid hard and sticky foods for the first 24 hours so as not to damage the fresh sealant.

Going forward, it’s important to follow these simple recommendations to maintain the results:
• Brush teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste;
• visit the dentist every 6 months to check the condition of the sealant and the health of the teeth;
• renew the protective coating in a timely manner if necessary.

Benefits of Fissure Sealants and Long-Term Effectiveness
  • Reliable protection against cavities—the risk is reduced by 80–95%.
  • Long-lasting protection—sealants last an average of 5–8 years and keep teeth healthy during their most vulnerable period.
  • Cost-effective prevention—sealants cost several times less than treating cavities and restoring damaged teeth.
  • Proven effectiveness—at our dental practice, in 92% of cases, sealants remain in excellent condition one year after the procedure.
  • A systematic approach—we conduct regular checkups, monitor the quality of the sealants, and replace them as needed.
